Abstract

The report focuses predominantly on whether sport-related events are impacting the human-based values of outstanding natural features and landscapes in the Rotorua District and whether sport-related events impact the reasons why people value special natural environments.

Investigating the general impact of sport-related event tourism on the values that make landscapes highly regarded by people is an enormous research scope. Therefore, to provide a detailed and useful investigation of the research problem the discussions in this document has been confined to some specific boundaries including a specific location and type of natural landscape.

There were two primary factors in deciding what location would be used as a case study. It was critical that the area contained a number of treasured natural landscapes, while also possessing a strong tourism and event related industry. Rotorua was selected as an appropriate location for the research as the District has numerous events and attracts over three million visitors annually, making it one the most popular tourism destinations in New Zealand. This healthy tourism industry coupled with the fact that there are a number of identified outstanding natural features and landscapes within the District means that Rotorua is the perfect context to apply the research problem.
