Abstract

The aims of this project were to assess and relate the physiological and decision-making demands of football refereeing in a natural performance environment. Five FIFA qualified referees wore GPS (Global Positioning System) and heart rate monitors while refereeing seven games in the New Zealand Football Championship (NZFC). The games were also videotaped and subsequently analysed by an independent panel of expert referees to check the accuracy of the matchday referee.s decisions. The match-day referees and a match assessor also completed a post game questionnaire to grade various aspects of physical performance and decisionmaking.
