Abstract

This [book: Nature-based tourism in peripheral areas: development or disaster] chapter provides a brief review of recent research on the impact of whale- and dolphin-based tourism in New Zealand on the targeted animals, and considers the implications for management. This review is preceded by a consideration of the challenges inherent in the study of small cetaceans. This is necessary in order to understand the context of the findings of the impact studies reviewed and has important implications for the suggestions posed later in considering management challenges.
