Abstract

Olympic education programme coherence and coordination in New Zealand has, until recently, been somewhat lacking. In recent times the New Zealand Olympic Academy has assumed responsibility and has worked collaboratively with the Government to introduce Olympic education through the National Physical Education Curriculum. In doing this, Olympic education resources adopted humanist pedagogies which this article now argues needs repositioning to embrace a pedagogy which is more socio-critical in nature. The article suggests that the way forward for Olympic education is to make more use of critical pedagogy in order to better understand the complexities of sport, Olympism and the Olympic Movement.
