The statistics for 2008 2009 reveal the following:

  • 829 Category 1 marine search and rescue incidents
  • 60 Category 2 incidents

  • 1676 incidents were attended

  • Over 1991 people were assisted

  • 245 were tourists (12%)

  • $1,839,639 was spent delivering Category 1 land incident response

  • $769,044 was spent delivering Category 1 marine incident response

  • $80,048 was spent by Police supporting Category 2 land incident response

  •  $16,588 was spent by Police supporting Category 2 marine incident response

  • 95 fatalities occurred, 14 through suicide

The delivery of additional Aircraft Observers Courses in the past year is an example of the continued cooperation in training and coordination that is occurring between SAR partners ensuring continual improvement in the SAR environment. In February 2009 121.5 Mhz beacons became obsolete. Correct use of 406 MHz beacons will enhance SAR responses however outdoor users must avail themselves of the improved technology and take sensible precautions when they venture out.

Police value the SAR partnerships we have and wish to record our thanks to all those who give of their time, effort and expertise in rescuing 2,000 persons and bringing relief to numerous families and friends.
