Abstract

This chapter describes some aspects of the relationship between wildlife, particularly yellow-eyed penguins (YEPs) (Megadyptes antipodes), and visitors at Sandfly Bay, Otago Peninsula, New Zealand. It is demonstrated that YEPs probably have always been, and still are, subjected to chronic and acute disturbance from other species with which they share the coastal environment. Even without nature tourists at Sandfly Bay, penguins face major challenges throughout their life course. The chapter explores the potential application of the precautionary principle to some management issues that emerge from this consideration of wildlife-visitor relationships.
