Abstract

In this chapter, the authors consider: the way in which sport could be argued to function as a surrogate religion; the notion of ‘secularisation’; the views of different Christian traditions towards sport; why some Christian traditions have been hostile or cautious about sporting participation; and the way in which Christian groups have used sport to further their own goals and objectives.
