Abstract

The author considers: the variety of processes contributing to the transition from traditional to modern sport in Britain; different elements in the establishment of Pākehā society in New Zealand and their implications for the developing sporting culture of the country; reasons for the encouragement of a diverse sporting culture in 19th century New Zealand; and impediments to sporting participation in 19th century New Zealand.
