Abstract

The strategic development of high performance sport in New Zealand is challenging, complex and ever-changing. This report analyzes the political, economic, social and technological influences to high performance sport strategy development at a national level and provides a series of recommendations for Sport Planners. The report finds that although environmental factors have major impacts to high performance sport, these are not always captured within strategies. High Performance Sport New Zealand’s High Performance Strategy for 2006 – 2012 was found to have a narrow focus that is predominantly operationally based. Key concepts including changing political priorities, surviving the current economic crisis with innovation, flexing to suit changing lifestyles, avoiding social exclusion and understanding the application of technology are discussed.
