Future Proofing the Active Recreation Sector Research Projects

Project introduction

The term ‘active recreation’ can be described as generally non-competitive physical activities for the purpose of wellbeing and enjoyment. The scope of the active recreation sector is a significant component of community sport and includes activities that can occur in built, landscaped and natural environments and include outdoor recreation, fitness/exercise, community recreation, aquatics, informal activity, play and appropriate/relevant education and training around these activities. The active recreation sector is made up of a diverse network of provider organisations and groups (both structured/formalised and unstructured), as well as individuals offering a range of services and delivery models including programme delivery/classes, education/training and advocacy/support. Organisations and groups can have a mix of professional staff and/or volunteers. Active recreation can also be personal, informal and spontaneous. In September 2015 Sport NZ commissioned Wellington based consultancy Angus and Associates to undertake two research projects to better understand this sector. These reports will form the basis for a series of recommendations to future proof the active recreation sector to meet the changing needs of participants.
