Hugh Lawrence is Senior Advisor on Sport and Recreation at the Ministry for Culture and Heritage. Previously, he spent over a decade in the Office for the Community and Voluntary Sector where he led work on developing resources to strengthen third sector funding arrangements and an extensive programme of sharing good practice for government engagement with community organisations. Some of his previous roles include CEO of Basketball New Zealand, and teaching positions at secondary and tertiary levels. Hugh has also served on the boards of education organisations and numerous national sporting organisations such as Sport and Exercise Science New Zealand, Coaching New Zealand, and Skills Active New Zealand, the sport and recreation sector ITO. Hugh achieved his undergraduate qualifications at Loughborough University (UK) and holds a Masters degree from Waikato University. He has commenced a PhD in public policy at Victoria University School of Government. His current work includes the development of social investment as a tool for New Zealand sport, arts and heritage sector organisations.
