Abstract

The main aim of this study was to examine the role family-orientated non-competitive outdoor recreation events play in on-going participation in outdoor recreation. This study contributes to an emerging body of work exploring family participation in outdoor recreation in New Zealand. The role events play in on-going participation in outdoor recreation has received minimal attention in previous research. Recreation research has also been slow to take the views of children and young people seriously. This study specifically sought the views of both children and parents and also explored how family relationships influence outdoor recreation participation.
