Abstract

This report summarises the key findings of a pilot study that collected public values, experiences and development preferences for public conservation land within the Southland region. This was acheived through the use of a self-administered online mapping and questionnaire method.

Information was captured from 268 respondents who accessed the project’s public participation geographic information system (PPGIS) website during January and February 2011. A total of 5250 markers were mapped by these respondents indicating the spatial location of their values, experiences and facility / development preferences. This information has provided the Department with a useful context for development of the draft Southland Conservation Management Strategy, alongside the more traditional information channels.

This study, and another run concurrently in Otago, were the first such studies in New Zealand and one of the project objectives was to evaluate the effectiveness of the PPGIS method for gathering information on community values, preferences and experiences. Recommendations are provided for future application of PPGIS methods in New Zealand.

Keywords: Southland, community values, public conservation land, GIS, public participation
