Abstract
This is the first year the Police Annual Search and Rescue Statistics have been collated from the electronic data collection form on Police Lotus Notes. The continued development of this form will enable more accurate statistics to be recorded with more data on lost person behaviour able to be captured. An 18% increase in recorded search and rescue (SAR) activity for the past year may indicate that statistics are being captured at a higher rate, that SAR incidents have increased or both.
The statistics for 2003 2004 give the following highlights:
- 652 class two land search and rescue incidents
- 632 class two marine search and rescue incidents
- 1309 persons were assisted during land and marine incidents
- $943,816 were spent delivering class II land incident response
- $456,706 were spent delivering class II marine incident response
- $32,240 were spent by Police delivering class III land incident response
- $8,115 were spent by Police delivering class III marine incident response
The Search and Rescue environment is changing with the development of the Search and Rescue Council, Secretariat and Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand. These organisations will have a beneficial effect on Search and Rescue within New Zealand.
