Abstract
This report focuses on the opportunities and challenges for recreation in peri-urban areas of three New Zealand cities: Auckland, Hamilton, and Tauranga. The research focuses on the perspectives of urban and recreation planners, and residents of four case study areas from these cities. This report is a summary of a more detailed research report, which is available from Sport New Zealand (Field et al 2013).
The study areas all share in common a drive for rapid urban development, yet have diverse landscape and population features. This research seeks to understand the common issues for outdoor recreation in these areas, what features of local recreation planning are supporting or impeding access to recreation, and the potential innovative solutions that may be emerging.
