Abstract

In this chapter, the author analyses the relationship that exists between Māori and sport in contemporary New Zealand society. In particular, she considers: what the contemporary issues are for Māori in sport with regards to culture and identity; the complex relationships that exist between indigenous cultures, multiculturalism, nationalism, and globalisation in sport; how the Treaty of Waitangi principles can be applied to sport practices and policies; and future implications for Māori sport and New Zealand sport.
