Abstract

This report summarises the results of a survey of 383 visitors to Ulva Island, Rakiura National Park carried out by the Department of Conservation during February 2012.

The key finding of the survey was the absence of any significant effects on the visitor experience from a recent rat incursion onto the previously predator free island. Other aspects examined in the report include visitor demographics, satisfaction, experience of key site values, perceptions of crowding and conflict and the uptake of messages around biosecurity.

The report compares results from the 2012 survey to those from a similar survey carried out on the Island in 2006 along with data from other DOC-managed day and short walks around New Zealand. It concludes with recommendations for ongoing management of the Island.

Keywords: Stewart Island, Rakiura, nature based tourism, biosecurity, predator free
