Abstract

In this chapter, the authors considers: the concepts of aggression and violence within the context of sport, including some of the basic theoretical explanations for violent behaviour in sport; how and why ‘sports’ violence is perceived and treated differently from other forms of violence in society; the key legal issues that emerge when sports violence is dealt with by the law; the link between violence in sport and the role of sport in defining and expressing a dominant form of masculinity; and the role of the media in reproducing sports violence.
