Abstract

Twelve focus groups and eight paired interviews were undertaken with 59 Wellington and Auckland active and inactive 11-14 year olds in 2005 to identify barriers and motivators to sport participation. It was found that ‘Actives’ are confident about taking risks. Non-actives need to decrease risk and build self confidence. Non-actives engage in non-sporting activities to help define themselves and to connect with others. As attitudes to sport are often formed early in life it is important that teachers and coaches and the home reinforce sports participation
