Abstract

The Arthur’s Pass National Park Management Plan allowed a three-year trial of mountain biking up the Poulter valley to the Trust / Poulter Hut.

This document outlines the monitoring programme used to consider the effects of mountain biking in the park. It presents and discusses initial results and makes some recommendations about the continuation of mountain bike activities in the Poulter valley.

Section two outlines the key components of the monitoring programme, which included: baseline data, level of use on track, biking activity off track or beyond end point, biophysical impacts on track, enforcement issues, damage to signs, and visitor conflicts with other track and hut users.

Section three discusses the analysis of the data and summarises that overall, the results indicate that the mountain-bike trial in the Poulter valley has had neither bio-physical impact on the route, nor significant social impact on traditional users.

Section four makes five recommendations supporting the conclusion that mountain biking in the Poulter valley should be allowed to continue for the remaining term of the national park plan.

Keywords: Monitoring, mountain biking, physical impacts
