Abstract

Sport New Zealand (Sport NZ) commissioned this Strategy to provide guidance and direction in the development of facilities for indoor sports on a national basis. The National Facilities Strategy for Indoor Sports aims to provide a framework for developing facilities which are appropriately scaled and located to meet the needs of users locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

The key aspects of the methodology were:

·         Identify the needs of the sector.

·         Identify the current state of provision.

·         Identify the trends.

·         Assess any gaps in provision and what the future needs might be for both competitive sport and community use.

The development of this strategy highlighted the lack of reliable data on existing and proposed facilities within NZ. Given this, users of the strategy are encouraged to cross reference information to ensure any assumptions are properly tested.

This file is version two of the strategy, including further data analysis. For any further queries please contact richard.lindsay@sportnz.org.nz)

Key findings include highlighting areas of New Zealand with an under supply of facilities. The Strategy highlights the collaboration required between the various sporting codes and facility providers to maximise usage of existing facilities. There is a wealth of useful information, including comprehensive appendices that include a decision making framework and a toolkit for facility development.

Sport NZ would like to acknowledge the input from the sporting codes, facility owners and other in the development of this strategy.
