Abstract

In this chapter, the author explores the linkages between sport and social identity, from the individual through to the national levels, and provides a range of examples illustrating this relationship. Specifically, she considers: the development of self-concept; the formation of social identities; the inter-relationship between sport and New Zealand identities; the influence of the media on identity development; ongoing research in the area of sport and identity.
