Abstract

Harbour Sport’s ActivAsian team surveyed 108 Chinese students in 4 primary schools on the North Shore:

  • Sunnynook Primary School
  • Sunnybrae Normal School
  • Takapuna Primary School
  • Willow Park Primary School

The main objective of the survey is to explore the sporting interests and barriers faced by Chinese students and families. Key findings include:

  1. 72% of students played sport after school, with the majority participating in swimming.
  2. 91% students said they would like to play MORE sports, the top three sports being table tennis, tennis and badminton
  3. Main barriers to sports are that they do other things (45%) and sport is too expensive (41%)
  4. A larger percentage of males (82%) played sport outside of school compared to females (62%)
