Abstract

In this chapter, the authors consider: forms of classification of bodies for sports competitions; the influence of medical discourses on definitions of sex and physical ability as they are employed in systems of classification in sports events; the subjection of the athlete’s body to surveillance and self-surveillance that both empower and constrain it; the development of sports events for athletes with disabilities; challenges by athletes who may be hindered by classifications; and they discuss the idea of the body as a cyborg, whereby the boundaries between ‘humanness’ and technology become blurred.
