Abstract

This report presents the results of a survey carried out by the Department of Conservation in Arrowtown during the first three months of 2013. The survey gathered information about the demographics, experiences and motivations of both visitors and non-visitors to the Arrowtown Chinese Settlement. A secondary purpose was to test various options for future development (including no development) with current visitors.

The report compares results from the Chinese Settlement with those from other surveys carried out at DOC managed locations in Otago and Southland. Results are also discussed in the context of regional and national tourism trends.

The report concludes with a number of recommendations for future management of the Chinese Settlement.

Keywords: Arrowtown, mining, heritage tourism
