Abstract

This book features interviews with and observations of successful coaches who hold athlete-centred philosophies. Includes chapters on Don Tricker, coach of the New Zealand Black Sox (men’s softball); Ruth Aitken and Leigh Gibbs, coach and assistant coach, respectively, of the New Zealand Silver Ferns (netball); Ian Rutledge, coach of the New Zealand Black Sticks (women’s hockey); Mike McHugh, coach of the Wellington Saints (men’s basketball) and assistant coach to the New Zealand Tall Ferns (women’s basketball); Team Seagate, world class adventure race team; Lyn Gunson, prior England and New Zealand netball coach; and Wayne Smith, international rugby coach. Also includes a feature on the Riccarton High School Senior Boys’ Volleyball team with coach Mark Norton. Questioning, Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) strategy and team culture tools are introduced as important aspects for enabling athletes to take responsibility for their learning. The final chapters cover sport and children, and review the key themes of the book with practical tools such as self-reflective analysis that enable athlete-centred coaching practices.
