Abstract

The author provides a socio-cultural and historical account of Māori and sport. This chapter includes representations of pre-colonial Māori physical cultural practices that were based on a holistic world view dissimilar to how Western sport is thought of today. It also considers Māori involvement in sport since colonisation, paying particular attention to its role in assimilating Māori into white New Zealand society. Finally, the author critically examines the popular perspectives around the success of Māori athletes.
