Abstract

The Competent Children, Competent Learners study is following a cohort of around 500 children. It began in 1993, when the cohort was near-age 5, and attending early childhood education in the Wellington region. This is the main report from the age-16 phase of the study and details students’ participation in school, their experiences of learning, and their achievement in terms of the study’s competency measures and their NCEA results. It also describes overall patterns of family life, friendships and interests out of school at age 16. This report includes a leisure based section on activities and interests that spans television watching, sports participation, physical activity, and computer use. The researchers present evidence on gender, ethnic and socioeconomic differences in these leisure patterns, and clusters of leisure time use. It also includes data on sports club membership.
