Abstract
The Department of Conservation is embarking on the development of a series of strategic planning exercises for Taranaki Maunga, Tongariro National Park, Whanganui National Park and Taupo Moana. These plans will be developed in a collaborative fashion with key partners (iwi) and stake holders i.e. Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs), local councils, concessionaires and communities of interest. As the Department of Conservation (DOC) is the current land manager for these areas (with the exception of Taupo which has more fragmented conservation lands) DOC is taking a lead role in facilitating the development of these plans.
To assist in developing these plans DOC commissioned Angus and Associates Limited to develop a Regional Tourism Report. The objective of the report was to provide DOC and our stakeholders with a better understanding of the global, national and regional (Tongariro Whanganui Taranaki Conservancy scale) context which each of the subsequent plans will be developed. This report considers relevant global, national and regional trends in nature based tourism, leisure preferences, cultural tourism and outdoor recreation. It also explores how each of the destinations in the Central North Island link to each other in terms of issues and opportunities for tourism and recreation.
