Abstract

This report focuses on the economic impacts of the Special K Women’s Triathlon on the local Taupo economy. The authors review visitor characteristics and expenditure, and the income generation capabilities of the event and local businesses. The Special K Triathlon, a women’s only triathlon (Swim 300m/Bike 10km/Walk or run 3km) was held on Sunday March 13th 2005 in Taupo. The research phase of the project was conducted from the event weekend and two weeks forward and involved: a web survey of participants (n=698 responses representing 1600 individuals, a response rate of 44%); a paper based survey of local businesses (29 businesses) and in-depth interviews with event organisers and Regional Tourism Organisation officials.
