Abstract

This report considers the potential negative impacts of visitors on the conservation values within marine protected areas. The research included a survey of New Zealand and international literature. The review showed that there are some significant problems associated with visitors to marine reserves in New Zealand. These include damage to intertidal and subtidal reefs and changes to fish behaviour through interactions with visitors feeding them. The author suggests that managers of each marine protected area need to identify and assess visitor impacts in their area and monitor the situation in order to adopt timely management responses. The author also suggests that further research is required to assess the impacts of various visitor activities and hence their sustainability.
